The FTSE seems to go from strength to strength and I want to dip my toes in with one of these guaranteed investment bonds, i.e. the ones where you can't lose any of yuor capital

So whats a good one out there ?

Look at the one from the post office, seems to be better than the norm, but don't get me wrong I'm no fan of these types of products Wink

GEBs are not a good investment product, they are designed to be sold easily usually by tied adviser.

They usually link you to an index such as the FTSE, not exactly an over achievement with capital protection.


The problems are -

1. They lock you in with penalties for 5 or more years !
2. They do not pay a dividend income i.e. no gain for income
3. At the end any gain is taxed as INCOME rather than CAPITAL ! Thus liable to income tax
4. Usually you don't even get the full 1 for 1 movement in the index, i.e. gains may be limited to say 80% of the gain in the FTSE
