HALIFAX Bank of Scotland staff were yesterday promised a shares windfall worth £67m after the bank posted a 17% rise in half-year profits to £2.65bn.

Free shares worth 5% of annual salary will be awarded to 60,000 employees in what the group believed to be the biggest payout of its kind in the UK.

The announcement came as profits from the company topped City expectations, helped by a 4% rise in profits to £1.13bn in high street banking.

Stronger growth came from outside the core retail business, with profits from corporate banking ahead by 14% to £758m.

The company added that losses from covering bad debts rose by more than £100m to £864m, which represented 0.24% of average customer advances.
