In a landmark decision, The Folkestone and Dover Water Services was given 'water scarcity status' by Environment Minister Elliot Morley. Other companies are now expected to apply for the same powers over water supply and use.
In a written ministerial statement, Mr Morley said: 'In many parts of the country, water is a precious resource which we can no longer simply take for granted.'
In a statement posted on its website today, the company says: 'Folkestone and Dover has a very dry climate. In fact it's one of the driest areas in the UK and many parts of the Middle East have more rain than we do.
'It's also getting even drier and warmer thanks to climate change, all of which faces us with a difficult challenge when it comes to supplying water.
'To complicate matters further we are not well off locally for natural supplies of water. We have no major sources of surface water to draw on either in rivers or reservoirs and so we have to reply on underground water stored in local chalk and gravel aquifers.
'This water is pumped out from boreholes across the district and we have around 20 main sources. So water in our area is a scarce resource and we have to manage the use of it very carefully to ensure a long term secure high quality supply.'
Compulsory meters will be introduced on a phased basis, says FDWS. 'We want 90% of our domestic customers to have meters by 2015,' it says.
This is likely to increasingly be implemented by other water companies across the southern region |
