BRITISH RED CROSS LAUNCH ASIAN EARTHQUAKE APPEAL
The British Red Cross has launched an urgent appeal today (9th October 2005) to aid tens of thousands of people affected by a severe earthquake that devastated areas of Pakistan and India on 8 October.
The Asian Earthquake Appeal initially aims to raise money to support the immediate relief efforts. As many as 18,000 people are feared dead and some 40,000 were injured by the quake, which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale.
The epicentre was close to Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-administered Kashmir, which lies some 95 kilometres north of Pakistan’s capital city Islamabad. Several villages in the Kashmir area have been completely destroyed, and countless others have been severely damaged.
Funds raised by the appeal will be used to buy immediate relief items including tents, tarpaulins and kitchen sets and to support the work of the volunteers and staff at the Pakistani Red Crescent and Indian Red Cross who have been at the disaster sites since the quake hit, giving practical support and comfort to those affected.
Paul Anticoni, Head of International Aid at the British Red Cross said: “Following a disaster as massive as this, the priority for the British Red Cross is to work with the Pakistani Red Crescent and Indian Red Cross to respond as quickly as possible to meet the immediate basic needs of the thousands of people affected. It is difficult to assess the extent of devastation at the moment but we do know that thousands of people are without shelter and desperately need our help.”
The British Red Cross has already pledged £250,000 to help with the disaster response, and is asking for donations to help support thousands of people whose homes and livelihoods have been devastated by the quake. It has already sent experts to the region and has its Logistics Response Unit on standby.
The Pakistani Red Crescent has three assessment teams active on the ground in affected areas; where they are carrying out relief operations and the Indian Red Cross are also carrying out rescue and relief work in the two worst affected areas – Baramulla and Uri.
The authorities are currently concentrating on evacuating the injured, setting up medical treatment centres at the affected areas, and providing temporary shelter for the tens of thousands whose homes have been completely destroyed or made unsafe by the disaster.
