The reasoning behind this from the Americans is to end the war earlier and perhaps save a million lives.

I don't buy it... As the best of the Japanese army had already been killed in previous battles, or isolated in pockets around the Pacific.

Japan itself was on the brink of collapse with everything in short supply due to the continious bombing of Japanese cities, i.e. no fuel, no food, no transporation, no armaments.

Perhaps the real reason was because the Russians were poised to invade and take Japan, and so that may have been the REAL reason ? That and wanting to 'test' the bomb on an untouched city for scientific purposes. Then why Nagasaki ? Why the rush to explode the 2nd bomb barely 3 days later ?

If they had not dropped the bomb then the japanese would have killed all the british prisoners of war, tens of thousands of them.
