The Premium Bond celebrates the 50th anniversary of its launch on the 1st of November. having paid out more than £7bn in cash prizes over the past five decades and 23 million people currently have £32bn invested in the bonds an average £1,131 each.
To mark the anniversary, NS&I is holding two special draws offering a total of 10 £1 million prizes. Five £1m prizes will be awarded in this month's draw, the anniversary of the sale of the first bonds, and a further five will be handed out in July 2007.
The birthday draws will bring the number of millionaires created since the top prize of £1 million was introduced in the mid 1990s to almost 180, drawn at random by NS&I's famous electronic random number indicator equipment, commonly known as Ernie. |
