For nearly a decade Penny Pratt, a chartered landscape architect, had lovingly tended the clematis montana that grew at the side of Middle Bottomley Farm in the west Yorkshire hamlet of Walsden.
The £5 plant prospered, festooning the walls of her stone-built farmhouse and arcing out towards the adjacent Wilden Hall.
All remained well in the rural idyll near Todmorden until the fateful day in July 2003, when Mrs Pratt arrived home to find that a large chunk of her beloved clematis had been hacked away. Her initial reaction was shock. Then she became upset and had to be taken into a friend's house to be comforted.
Slightly recovered, and in high dudgeon, she followed the trail of torn tendrils and seed heads to Wilden Hall.
There she accused her neighbour, Jeanne Wilding, of criminal damage and demanded that she leave her property alone.
Yesterday Wilding, a 56-year-old businesswoman, was found guilty of causing criminal damage to the clematis.
She is still on trial at Calderdale magistrates' court, Halifax, accused of assaulting her rival with a wheelbarrow, pouring a bag of compost over her head and using shears to damage a tyre on another neighbour's Mercedes van.
Mrs Pratt told Deputy District Judge Sandra Keen that she had been "furious'' to find that her neighbour had "destroyed a thing of beauty''.
She went on: "Quite a large chunk had been cut away from the right-hand side of the bush. It was maybe a metre wide and probably a similar amount in height.''
Asked by James Ward, prosecuting, how she had responded, she replied: "I probably asked her to leave my land and told her she was causing criminal damage. She told me to call the police and to go away. She said she needed access to her postbox.''
more from the prats ?
