Our population is ageing
The number of over-50s in the UK is projected to rise from the current 20 million to 25 million in 20 years' time. By 2020, the over-50s will comprise half the adult population.

The number of people aged 65 and over is currently 9 million and is projected to reach 12.5 million by 2020 as the baby boomers reach retirement, with a peak of over 16 million during the 2030s.

The numbers of the older old are projected to increase at a faster rate, with those 75 and over more than doubling, from today’s 4.5 million to over 9 million by 2050.

In contrast, the numbers in younger age groups are projected to be static or decline. As a consequence, by 2007, the population of pensionable age is projected to exceed the number of children under16.

Ageing is a global phenomenon, affecting developed nations and an increasing number of developing countries. Indeed the speed of ageing is considerably faster in several of our major trading partners - countries like Japan, Italy and Germany - than it is in the UK.

Many of the effects of the Age Shift will occur surprisingly fast. Already, patterns of consumer demand and the labour market are changing rapidly as the post-war baby boom generation becomes middle aged and is followed by a much smaller younger generation. Other effects will only be fully felt after the 2020s when, for example, there will be very sharp growth in the number of pensioners in Europe. However, these longer-working changes should be acted upon as a matter of urgency so as to avert a potentially catastrophic economic climate.

I think they should cut the state and public pensions.

Whats the point of making promises of pensions if they are not going to be able to deliver ???

People have to save more

People have worked all their lives, why should they have to pay for the mistakes of the government in their retirement ?

One day the new arrivals will also be old Wink

So yes, maybe the pensions crisis can be delayed for another generation, but each generation will need an influx of more workers.

Britian is not as far along the path of an ageing population and many other western countries

And the poor countries will be hit much harder by it !
I.e. those with relatively large young populations today will wake up to a much larger % of old people than Britainw will.

countries such as China, India and Brazil are sitting on population time bombs, as unlike the west, they cannot import fresh young labour to replenish the population pool
