Union and Royal Mail Management announced a deal on Friday that looks set to bring the highly damaging postal strike to an end that has seen chaos in the UK's postal system for near 2 weeks. However details of the deal have yet to be presented to the Unions Executive on Monday.
The strike was called in response to Royal Mails demands for modernisation of working practices and changes to salary and pension schemes to make the Royal Mail more competitive as it faces increasing competition from new smaller operators such as DX which has seen a surge in orders during the strike.
The official strike started with 2 day stoppages 2 weeks ago, and was followed this week by widespread wildcat strikes by thousands of postal workers that increasingly look set to continue.
Even if the strike ends, there is a huge backlog of mail that will take several weeks to clear and will leave Royal Mail with lasting damage in lost business to competitors.
