There are a number of good current accounts with online banking such as

Smile, halifax, Alliance and Liecester etc.

My main account is with allieance and Liecester, which gives me an interest rate of 5.5% on credit balance upto £2.5k

You need to credit the account with £1k or more per month to get the 5.5% interest rate.

I bank with Halifax.

They have lots of branches and offer a good all encompassing online service i.e. high interest on their websaver, share dealing, credit cards, monthly saver, all can be managed online.

very convenient.

I use halifax

There online service is very useful, though the people in the branches don't seem to be too upto speed on their products.

So thumbs up to Halifax

Cool

I also nominate the halifax account.

Find it very useful to transfer money from and to my current account to the websaver accoutn for the higher interest rate.

There phone and branch service may be lacking but their on-line service is pretty good.

As of the present, i.e. Nov 2006, the Nationwide offers a good current account. But offcourse they could also follow First Directs example and start charging.

Smile however have released a statement that they have no plans to do away with free banking so yuo could look into that bank as well
